Harry Potter Party Prep

Isaac's Harry Potter birthday party was the most fun to plan of any party yet.  So many creative ideas out there.  There are too many good pictures, so I'm going to split it into 2 posts.  This one will be on the set up and details.  The next will be the actual party.

The first stop planned for the kids was the Wand Shop, where they could decorate their own wand.

The common room was set up for the kids to hang out in as they waited for the others to finish their wands.

This is also where we played the "Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans" game.  The kids who were brave enough picked a random jelly belly bean to try.  If it was black, it would either be licorice or skunk spray.  White was either coconut or baby wipes.  Other gross flavors included vomit, boogers, and canned dog food.  Most of the kids who tried it got gross ones.  Quite entertaining.  I tried several until I got a vomit-flavored one.  Then I lost my appetite for the game.

Isaac displayed his Hogwarts Castle Lego set that Mimi and Boppa got him for an early birthday present.

Adel, as Professor Snape, prepared a Mentos and soda potions demonstration (using different colored sodas. This was our test run before the party.  Notice the cool Mentos dispenser we created.  (Mom and Dad had way too much fun with this party prep!)

Robin helped me set up the Potions Class area with jars of colored vinegar and canisters of baking soda. We also included a Pop Rocks potion that the kids could taste.  (Oh, and you can see I'm wearing my "professor" costume.)

As a party favor, the kids got a Pop Rocks potion kit to take home.

After the party, Isaac enjoyed his party favor experiment (Abby ate hers the night of the party...typical!).

After potions class the kids would attend Care of Magical Creatures class where they could choose an animal to care for and complete a puzzle game about animal facts.

After the Creatures class, the kids went on a scavenger hunt for stolen Gringott's gold (chocolate gold coins).  I copied and changed some wording for the hunt from another blog I found.

And we prepared the breakfast room as "The Feast of Wands," where every food item was wand-shaped (carrot sticks, celery, grapes on skewers, nuggets on skewers, and bread sticks).

And the Great Hall was ready for the feast.

Isaac's "cake" was, as usual, Rice Krispie Treats.  This time, we shaped them into basilisk eggs, wrapped in foil.

Inside each egg was a baby basilisk for the kids to keep as a favor.

Abby dressed as Hermione Granger.

And of course, Isaac was Harry Potter.

The cutest one ever, if you ask me.

Complete with lightening scar on forehead.

Practicing a duel.

Hermione and Harry, ready to party.

I seriously had the most fun planning this.  Executing it was exhausting, but also fun.  And everything added up, from favors to food to activities, was under our $100 party budget.  Yay!
